My name is Louis Pemjean and I live in Columbus, OH. I am a long time
retired A&P Instruments Technician –
and a DC-3 lover. I am addressing you for something trivial but that could
be of some interest for a person in the aviation field. I was wondering if
any of the pilots that you meet have mentioned the following.
In the recent hit movie The Expendables I noticed a blunder. In the
suspense scene when Stallone was desperately running on the dock trying to
catch the airplane (probably an old Catalina) taking off from the island,
they focus a glimpse of the instruments panel where a fuel and oil pressure
gauge can be seen (I believe it was the old 3 in 1 gauge, fuel & oil
press. and oil temp). In this particular gauge the engine fuel pressure
pointer was UP, and the engine oil pressure pointer was on ZERO –
it is obvious that both pointers should have been up, indicating pressure,
because the engine was running on take off. ( except if the instrument was
inop.)
It is incomprehensible, in my opinion, that the aviation consultants,
director, producers, etc. could have overlooked such a big mistake.
If you mention my story to the members of the Association perhaps someone
might be curious to verify what I saw. It would be a good test to check the
pilot’s visual reaction time, because that shot lasts for a few seconds
only.
